Intermediate Wheel Techniques with John Hawkins
This intermediate wheel throwing class will focus on techniques to help you advance in your throwing abilities. We will focus on specific techniques from centering larger amounts of clay, throwing taller, collaring, adding lids, and joining multiple thrown sections. We will combine all of these techniques, and others, to produce multiple final pieces. Before signing up, students need to be comfortable in centering 3 pounds of clay. The class will meet over 7 weeks with a new topic each week. Each week will build on previous skills, so attendance is important.
The weekly skills are as follows: Week 1 - centering 5 pounds/ claw pull/ wall compression (Vases); Week 2 - gallery shelves/ lids (jars); Week 3 - joins (tall vases or jars); Week 4- Collaring (Bottles /jugs); Week 5 - Combine all previous techniques (Table lamp); Week 6 - centered puck altering (cake plates/doughnut bird feeders); and Week 7 - finishing up your projects.
Pieces will put in for bisque as they become dry during the course. We will not have a dedicated glazing week. If you are an Independent Studio member, you can glaze at your own pace. If you are not an IS member, please let me know and we can discuss and accommodate your glazing needs. $100.00 course + $60 materials fee
