3:30 PM - 4:30 PM    Lee County Special Olympics - Special Olympics Volleyball Practice - Fall 2025
Auburn Parks and Recreation supports Special Olympics by sponsoring teams for many of the Special Olympic events. Currently, we support athletes for basketball, bowling, flag football, golf, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Practices take place throughout the year with the help of local Special Olympics’ volunteer coaches. You must be at least 8 years of age and meet the requirements of the Alabama Special Olympic Guidelines to participate. We currently need Coaches for our Special Olympic Athletes. If you have the time and the interest to help coach these dynamic and fun-loving kids, please contact the Lee County Special Olympics Director or the State office today!Basketball PracticeBasketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players of all ages and abilities will enjoy this sport, from young players learning to handle the ball to older, more experienced players learning the strategies. Join us to learn basketball skills and participate in the State Basketball Competition! State competition is usually on a Thursday and Friday the first week in March and it is held in Montgomery. Ability to attend the state competition is required for participation. FREE. Volleyball Practice  The game of volleyball is attractive to all types of players, from competitive to recreational, young and old. To play volleyball players need to acquire a few basic skills, learn a few rules, require very little equipment, and can play the game almost anywhere - from the beach to the gym. The aim of the sport is to score more points by hitting the ball with the hands and sending it over the net to the opponent's court. We will learn basic skills and scrimmage, and end with the state competition that is usually in November. FREE.  Bowling PracticeAlthough Bowling does not belong to the Olympic sports, it is among the most popular sports in Special Olympics. It is a particularly beneficial sport to people with intellectual disabilities, irrespective of their age or sports abilities, since it ensures physical exercise and at the same time participation and social integration. Plus, it's great fun! Athletes will prepare for the early spring tournament and State Games. Practice will continue through May 2026 and ends with State Games. $3.50/game to be paid at AMF Lanes .SwimmingJoin us for aquatics practice! To join our swim team you must already be proficient in basic swim strokes, be able to float/tread water, and have appropriate water safety skills. In aquatics practice we will teach you stroke refinement, speed, turns, and more. Practice is at the Opelika SportsPlex in the indoor heated pool. Practice will continue through the end of May and end with State Games. FREE Track and Field Practice Join us for Track and Field practice at the Exceptional Foundation of East Alabama Building! We will work on running/walking, fitness skills, and field skills. This is our fall practice and then we will resume in March for another round of Track and Field practice. FREE Golf Registration for the 2023-2024 Special Olympics Season begins August 19 and ends November 3. This enables us to plan teams and determine the number of athletes we will have at practices! Golf will resume in late winter/early spring. $6 for Range Balls to be paid at Pines Crossing Golf CourseSpecial Olympics Cornhole League – NEW!Join us and learn the basics of this new Special Olympics sport. This game can be played individually, athlete v. athlete, or unified, in athlete/peer partner teams. Practices will be led by members of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. FREE**Registration is required for each sport - this includes completing health forms and release forms.**Registration for the 2025-2026 Special Olympics Season begins August 4 and ends December 29. This enables us to plan teams and determine the number of athletes we will have at practices and competitions! Auburn Parks and Recreation supports Special Olympics by sponsoring teams for many of the Special Olympic events. Currently, we support athletes for basketball, bowling, flag football, golf, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Practices take place throughout the year with the help of local Special Olympics’ volunteer coaches. You must be at least 8 years of age and meet the requirements of the Alabama Special Olympic Guidelines to participate. We currently need Coaches for our Special Olympic Athletes. If you have the time and the interest to help coach these dynamic and fun-loving kids, please contact the Lee County Special Olympics Director or the State office today!Basketball PracticeBasketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players of all ages and abilities will enjoy this sport, from young players learning to handle the ball to older, more experienced players learning the strategies. Join us to learn basketball skills and participate in the State Basketball Competition! State competition is usually on a Thursday and Friday the first week in March and it is held in Montgomery. Ability to attend the state competition is required for participation. FREE. Volleyball Practice  The game of volleyball is attractive to all types of players, from competitive to recreational, young and old. To play volleyball players need to acquire a few basic skills, learn a few rules, require very little equipment, and can play the game almost anywhere - from the beach to the gym. The aim of the sport is to score more points by hitting the ball with the hands and sending it over the net to the opponent's court. We will learn basic skills and scrimmage, and end with the state competition that is usually in November. FREE.  Bowling PracticeAlthough Bowling does not belong to the Olympic sports, it is among the most popular sports in Special Olympics. It is a particularly beneficial sport to people with intellectual disabilities, irrespective of their age or sports abilities, since it ensures physical exercise and at the same time participation and social integration. Plus, it's great fun! Athletes will prepare for the early spring tournament and State Games. Practice will continue through May 2026 and ends with State Games. $3.50/game to be paid at AMF Lanes .SwimmingJoin us for aquatics practice! To join our swim team you must already be proficient in basic swim strokes, be able to float/tread water, and have appropriate water safety skills. Karate is a martial art that emphasizes self-confidence, self-discipline, respect, and physical fitness. In this class we focus on coordination, physical fitness, listening skills, and teach the basics of karate: strikes, blocks, and kicks. We will begin teaching kata, the basis for practicing all techniques. In the advanced and older participant classes, you may engage by physical contact with the instructor and with specialized equipment. In sparring there will be physical contact with other students in a controlled environment. Each class will also include physical activity and exercises to develop coordination and control. Auburn Parks and Recreation supports Special Olympics by sponsoring teams for many of the Special Olympic events. Currently, we support athletes for basketball, bowling, flag football, golf, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Practices take place throughout the year with the help of local Special Olympics’ volunteer coaches. You must be at least 8 years of age and meet the requirements of the Alabama Special Olympic Guidelines to participate. We currently need Coaches for our Special Olympic Athletes. If you have the time and the interest to help coach these dynamic and fun-loving kids, please contact the Lee County Special Olympics Director or the State office today!Basketball PracticeBasketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players of all ages and abilities will enjoy this sport, from young players learning to handle the ball to older, more experienced players learning the strategies. Join us to learn basketball skills and participate in the State Basketball Competition! State competition is usually on a Thursday and Friday the first week in March and it is held in Montgomery. Ability to attend the state competition is required for participation. FREE. Volleyball Practice  The game of volleyball is attractive to all types of players, from competitive to recreational, young and old. To play volleyball players need to acquire a few basic skills, learn a few rules, require very little equipment, and can play the game almost anywhere - from the beach to the gym. The aim of the sport is to score more points by hitting the ball with the hands and sending it over the net to the opponent's court. We will learn basic skills and scrimmage, and end with the state competition that is usually in November. FREE.  Bowling PracticeAlthough Bowling does not belong to the Olympic sports, it is among the most popular sports in Special Olympics. It is a particularly beneficial sport to people with intellectual disabilities, irrespective of their age or sports abilities, since it ensures physical exercise and at the same time participation and social integration. Plus, it's great fun! Athletes will prepare for the early spring tournament and State Games. Practice will continue through May 2026 and ends with State Games. $3.50/game to be paid at AMF Lanes .SwimmingJoin us for aquatics practice! To join our swim team you must already be proficient in basic swim strokes, be able to float/tread water, and have appropriate water safety skills. In aquatics practice we will teach you stroke refinement, speed, turns, and more. Practice is at the Opelika SportsPlex in the indoor heated pool. Practice will continue through the end of May and end with State Games. FREE Track and Field Practice Join us for Track and Field practice at the Exceptional Foundation of East Alabama Building! We will work on running/walking, fitness skills, and field skills. This is our fall practice and then we will resume in March for another round of Track and Field practice. FREE Golf Registration for the 2023-2024 Special Olympics Season begins August 19 and ends November 3. This enables us to plan teams and determine the number of athletes we will have at practices! Golf will resume in late winter/early spring. $6 for Range Balls to be paid at Pines Crossing Golf CourseSpecial Olympics Cornhole League – NEW!Join us and learn the basics of this new Special Olympics sport. This game can be played individually, athlete v. athlete, or unified, in athlete/peer partner teams. Practices will be led by members of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. FREE**Registration is required for each sport - this includes completing health forms and release forms.**Registration for the 2025-2026 Special Olympics Season begins August 4 and ends December 29. This enables us to plan teams and determine the number of athletes we will have at practices and competitions!
